| "As a landscape
painter, I am primarily
interested in responding to the color and patterns of light. Around Chicago, our lakefront
harbor settings, skies and reflective patterns of water constantly inspire me. The Indiana
Dune National Lakeshore, just along the bend at the bottom of Lake Michigan, is also a
source of visual excitement with the changing shadows and light during different times of
day and seasons.
I love working outside and work more and more on location. I am challenged by the quickly
changing light and atmospheric conditions. Chicago offers so much to my senses; even the
varieties of gray are becoming more interesting to me. My current work responds to the
flat, watery landscapes out in the forest preserves near my home. I'm also back and forth
to the city to respond to the rapidly changing environment on the near west sideof
new and old, people and buildings, reflections in windows and doorways."

Merit Award: Running the Line,22"x28"
|
|
Kathleen Newman has been sailing since she was a
kid. "Sailing is a big part of my life," she says. The painting
Running the Line refers to the starting line of a sailboat race.
"The reflections in the water have always excited me," she says, "especially in the late afternoon light."
Though she loves the water and harbor scenes all around Lake Michigan, Kathleen paints the urban scenes as well,
finding an old world feel to a Chicago street, a mysterious glimpse into an Old Town courtyard. |

Finalist:
Early Morning Breeze |
|
|
She paints people and
their neighborhoods as well as their buildings, piers and ocean views. "I love to travel
other places," she says, "but, it's best to paint what you know, what you see
the most." For Kathleen, that's going to be near the water. |
